an Extraordinary Exhibition at the Bundeskunsthalle Bonn
13.April – 20. August 2017

The exhibition “Iran: Early Cultures Between Water and Desert” was one of the most significant presentations of Iranian art and cultural history in Germany. Featuring over 400 artifacts from various historical periods—ranging from prehistoric times to the Achaemenid era (c. 7000 BC to 330 BC)—the exhibition took visitors on a fascinating journey through Iran’s rich and diverse past.
Exhibition Architecture – Spaces Full of Inspiration
The architectural design of the exhibition was inspired by the diverse architectural traditions of Persia and reflected the striking landscapes of Iran. The concept translated the country’s extreme geographical contrasts—from snow-covered mountains to the scorching Lut Desert, from the tropical climate of the Caspian Sea to the arid steppes of the Persian Gulf—into five thematic spaces, each shaped by distinctive architectural elements and immersive scenography.
Architectural Highlights:
- Curated Spatial Worlds: Various exhibition areas were designed using typical oriental architectural elements.
- Scenography & Display Concept: The scenography, display cases, and exhibition layout were developed in collaboration with Atelier Schubert.
- Persian Garden: In cooperation with experienced architects and landscape designers, a temporary Persian garden was created, offering visitors an authentic and immersive experience.
Bedeutung der Ausstellung
The exhibition was a milestone for German-Iranian cultural cooperation and offered a multifaceted picture of Iran’s cultural heritage – beyond political tensions. It highlighted Iran’s deep historical roots and its outstanding contribution to world culture.
